Aeneas in the New World: Reshaping the Interpretive Motif in Barlow's Columbiad
Barlow's Columbiad evokes Virgil's Aeneid by using the motifs of revelation and interpretation to explore the role of the past in informing the present. Virgil creates an opposition between Aeneas, who receives prophecies and signs but is prevented from interpreting them by his shock and fear, and his father Anchises, who interprets the prophecies and guides the Trojans. Aeneas learns to use hi...
متن کاملAeneas: A Tool to Enable Applications to Effectively Use Non-Relational Databases
Non-relational databases arise as a solution to solve the scalability problems of relational databases when dealing with big data applications. However, they are highly configurable prone to user decisions that can heavily affect their performance. In order to maximize the performance, different data models and queries should be analyzed to choose the best fit. This may involve a wide range of ...
متن کاملPIUS: Status and perspectives
Nuclear energy represents an important option for future energy supply, but the nuclear option could be jeopardized if severe reactor accidents, such as the ones at Three Mile Island or Chernobyl, were to continue to occur anywhere in the world. The PIUS (Process Inherent Ultimate Safety) reactor development effort is based on the conviction that future developments of nuclear energy for civili...
متن کاملPIUS: peptide identification by unbiased search
SUMMARY We present PIUS, a tool that identifies peptides from tandem mass spectrometry data by analyzing the six-frame translation of a complete genome. It differs from earlier studies that have performed such a genomic search in two ways: (i) it considers a larger search space and (ii) it is designed for natural peptide identification rather than proteomics. Differently from other peptidomics ...
متن کاملupward-going muon flux from the WIMP annihilation in the sun or the earth
We consider the upward-going muon flux due to the WIMP annihilations in the cores of the sun and the earth, including the upper bound on the branching ratio for Bs → μμ decay. We find that the constraint from Bs → μμ is very strong in most parameter space, and exclude the supergravity parameter space regions where the expected upward-going muon fluxes are within the expected reach of AMANDA II.
